Milestones - newborn 4 weeks old

Wow! You have all just finished living your first whole month together. Well done! Here's how your newborn is developing.

4 week old milestones newborn

You will probably wonder, "Where did the time go?" It can become a blur of feeding, sleeping, waking up (again), diapering and burping. While all of this action has been going on, your newborn has learned a lot in a month.

  • By the end of the first month, neck muscles are becoming stronger. Turns head side to side when lying on tummy.
  • Vision is still blurry, but he will enjoy looking at faces - especially yours!
  • Moves arms and legs equally. Movements are still jerky.
  • When you speak, he will begin to turn his head toward you. Will still startle at loud noises.
  • Reflexes are still strong - see our article on Newborn reflexes for more information.

What Your Newborn Loves:

  • Looking at your face and simple baby books with contrasting colors.
  • Cuddles from you.
  • For you to smile and talk with him.
  • Your baby may or may not enjoy tummy time - all babies are different. It's a good idea to create a regular time to do this as it helps with developing neck, back and arm muscles - Tummy time also helps to avoid positional flattening. Try lying down on the floor facing your baby if he is fussy in this position or lay him across your lap. It doesn't have to be for long. Just a short period of time each day is great .
  • Being carried close to you - a sling is great for this.
