Diapering a wiggly toddler

Do you feel as though you qualify for a gold medal in wrestling whenever it's time to change a diaper?

I remember coming out second best during diaper changing time with my 9 month old. As I saw that cute bare (undiapered bottom) crawl away in victory I marveled at the strength in such a little body. Believe it or not , there are ways to be creative in your diaper changing techniques. Try some of the following ideas to make changing a wiggly toddler easier.

  • Reserve a special song that you only sing during diaper changes. When your baby hears this special song she is likely to calm down.
  • Distract. Sing a silly song, talk about a special event, put a clean diaper on your head or pull a funny face - anything that will keep your toddlers attention.
  • Hang an interesting toy over the diaper changing table - remember to change the toy every few weeks or so to keep your baby interested.
  • Put pictures of your toddler's favorite things on the wall near the change area.
  • Have a special basket of interesting toys or little board books just for changing time. Keep special toys in your diaper bag to be used for change time out and about - rotate them often.
  • Make sure your toddler is dressed in easy to access clothes - sometimes the part that toddlers protest about is the amount of time it take to get to the diaper.
  • It is worth trying  'pull-up' type diapers - some toddlers just hate the fact that diaper changes slow them down. Although you will find that stand up changing is okay for wet diapers, but too messy for 'poopy' diapers.
  • Don’t take both hands off your baby - toddlers can fall off changing tables.
  • If your toddler is particularly active during changing times use the floor, this is by far the safest place to change a diaper.
Parent Tip: Dillon suggests, "When time allows let them choose the spot to lie down and be diapered - choice makes them calmer."

Hunny
I make animal sounds like frog, bird or lizard. I would say, "Where where where? Where is the frog? Then I make the frog sound. That makes him curious all the time and my 9-month old baby boy would just look at me in amazement as I make those sounds. Never fails to keep him still.
