12 ways to encourage newborn language development
The way you interact with your baby can help to develop language and communication skills.
Ways to nurture your baby’s language development:
- Hold your baby close so that he or she can focus on your face.
- Position your baby so that you are often within sight. A sling or carrier can be good for this.
- Try to minimize background noises so that your baby can hear your voice. Having a radio or TV on all of the time, does not let your baby focus on you.
- Make eye contact often - babies love to look at faces - especially yours :)
- Imitate the movements and sounds your baby makes, then wait for him or her to repeat them. When your baby makes sounds, answer him by repeating and adding words. This will help him learn to use language.
- Take time to communicate with your baby many times throughout the day.
- Talk to your baby. It is soothing to hear your voice. Talk to him or her about what you are doing, what's going to happen etc. Ask questions e.g. "Shall we go for a walk?", then answer them yourself - "Yes, lets go for a walk". When we talk to babies we often use 'Motherese", also called "baby talk" or "Parentese". Motherese is characterized by: using a high pitched voice, exaggerating intonation, using simple language with short, repetitive words and speaking more slowly. Research shows that babies pay attention to, and actually prefer this type of talking. So, go ahead and use baby talk with your baby - you will be helping him or her develop language.
- Read to your baby. This helps her develop and understand language and sounds.
- Sing to your baby. Read our article Music and your newborn.
- The best time to play with your baby is when he's alert and relaxed. Watch your baby closely for signs of being tired or fussy so that you can take a break.
- Give you and your child some quiet time. If your child becomes fussy, he or she may be overwhelmed by all of the communication!
- Parenting can be hard work! Take care of yourself physically, mentally, and emotionally. It is easier to enjoy your new baby and be a positive, loving parent when you are feeling good yourself.
