Physical development birth to four weeks

As a parent we find comfort in knowing a few things that most babies do. Here is a list of these things. It's fun to see and recognize them in our own little one.

Enjoy looking over these areas of development and learn what your little baby is experiencing in her world as she grows.

Motor development this month:

  • As the nervous system adjusts this first month, her movements will become less jerky.
  • The majority of actions are reflexes such as the "tonic neck reflex". You'll know when your baby has overcome this reflex when she successfully brings her fist to her mouth.
  • Her ability to suck will improve.
  • She will begin to use her eyes to "track" an object that is moved slowly in front of her from side to side.
  • Remember to be careful of her head; as the neck muscles are still developing her head can flop backwards if it is unsupported.

Ways to encourage her growth in this area

  • Give her some tummy time about three or four times a day for just a few minutes. This helps to strengthen the neck and back.
  • Move interesting objects in front of her eyes or use a moving mobile to encourage tracking with the eyes
  • Encourage sucking on a thumb, fist or pacifier as this goes along way to developing her ability to comfort herself and to develop her sucking skill.
  • Move your baby around the house, so she can see different and interesting sounds and objects.  You can easily do this by putting your baby in a sling or carrier as you do chores.
